The Vedas are the four main pillars of Hinduism and the Adi Granth.  The word 'Veda' originates from the original Sanskrit word 'Vid' which means 'to know' meaning knowledge.  The Vedas are also called 'Shruti' as they have been passed down from one generation to another through oral speaking and listening.

There are different opinions about the entire creation period of Vedic literature.  The origin of the Vedas is believed to be thousands of years ago.  Initially it was spread by the Shruti tradition, while in terms of writing it is divided into two main parts:

1.  Pre-Vedic period (1500 to 1000 BC) and,

2.  Post-Vedic period (1000 to 800 BC).

Based on the manuscripts found so far, the Rig Veda is considered to be pre-Vedic.  While the rest of the Vedas, Samhitas, Brahmans, Aranyakas as well as Upanishads are considered to be post-Vedic period.

The Vedas are four:

Rigveda,

Yajurveda,

Samaveda

Atharvaveda.

Vedic and Vedic literature is called Vedic literature which is divided into seven sections:

मंत्रसंहिताब्राह्मण ग्रंथोआरण्यक ग्रंथोउपनिषदोसुत्रग्रंथोप्रातिशाख्यअनुक्रमणी

Meaning of Purana:

The word Purana literally means: Puranu, old, ancient, archaic.

If we break the meaning of the word Purana, then Pura means ancient and An means non.  Thus the ancient stories in which they are told are the Puranas.

According to the great grammarian Pani, the word Purana originates from the word 'Pura Bhavan'.  The word means 'what happened'.  That is, the Purana describes what happened in ancient times.

According to Acharya Yask, the word Purana is derived from the sentence 'Pura Navam Bhavati'.  This sentence means what is new despite being ancient.  That is to say, the Puranas include old stories as well as new ones.

In terms of meaning, the name of the complete truth is called Purana.  The same truths that are told through mantras in the Vedas and Upanishads are the same truths that are told through stories in the Puranas.

The cultural meaning of Purana is that the religious texts in which the story of the history from the beginning of the creation to the end of the creation is told.

How many pirana?:-

It is difficult to say exactly how many Puranas there are, as Puranas are texts that have been composed even in the earliest times, in the Middle Ages and even in modern times.  So the total number of Puranas may vary according to different scholars.  But according to a general belief, there are 6 Puranas in total.  Of these the main Purana is eighteen, known as the Mahapurana.  In addition to these eighteen Mahapuranas, eighteen other Puranas are also considered valid, which are known as Uppuranas.  The remaining 6 Puranas are known as Uppuranas.

The names of the main eighteen Puranas, their chapters / sections and details of the verses are given below in the form of a table for easy explanation:

Have you just completed your 10th standard (SSC)? You may be confused about deciding a right career path. Selecting the right course after class X is very important as this will have an important impact on what will you become in future.

What Afer SSC  Science or Commerce or Arts?

A good option after 10th is studying +2 or HSC. It can help to secure a strong foundation for further studies like graduation and post graduation. The selection of the streams for 11th and 12th standard (HSC) depends upon the students aptitude but the most important factor is one’s interest in the subject and the purpose for selecting the course.

Whether to choose science, commerce or arts stream is the most difficult thing to decide for students. Lets make it simple. Choose a field in which you have passion. Remember, no field is better or superior than other. It just depends on what you like to do.

If you select Science stream, you have further 3 more options for selecting the subjects. You can select Maths or Biology from the optional subject. Some students opt for both Mathematics and Science subjects. If you want to become engineer then select Maths and if you want to go in medical field then select Biology.

Diploma

Instead of going for HSC (10 +2 years), you can opt for Diploma engineering after standard 10. Some fields that you can select in diploma are Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication, Computer technology, Information technology, Information & Control Engineering, Power Engineering, Mechatronics, Hotel Management and Cattering technology, Plastic engineering, Fabrication Technology, Chemical Engineering, Printing Technology, Ceramic Technology, Architecture Assistant-ship, Automobile Engineering, Metallurgy, Textile Manufacturing, Textile Processing, Mining Engineering etc. You will generally need to give an entrance test to get admission. Generally the Central diploma admission committee takes the exam.
