ABOUT SHALA SWACHHTA GUNAK (SSG):
WASH in Schools supports students with schools that provide a safe, healthy and comfortable environment where children grow, learn and thrive. It improves attendance, health and cognitive development, increases girls’ participation, establishes positive hygiene behaviours, offers the opportunity to introduce better WASH practices in families and communities and addresses issues of inequity and exclusion. India’s 2009 Right to Education Act, the appeal of the Prime Minister of India to incorporate hygiene education in schools and the extensive work done on WASH in Schools by many of the Indian States provide a very relevant context to understand the importance of WASH in Schools.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India launched “Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya” (SBSV) initiative in 2014 to ensure that all schools in India have access to separate functional toilets for boys and girls. The initiative also has its emphasis on promoting safe and appropriate hygiene practices in schools and behaviour among children.
Government of Gujarat(GoG) in the recent years have made significant strides in promoting WASH in schools across the State. Shala Swachhta Gunak (SSG) is a GoG initiative to implement benchmarking systems for performance measurement and effective monitoring thereby enhancing the quality of WASH facilities in schools. This application is focussing on the potential of schools for achieving Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar (SVP) 2018-19 by addressing the WASH facilities in the schools and strategizing towards benchmarking of schools with the allocation of resources and facilities.
Shala Swachhta Award is the state government’s initiative to institutionalize and incentivize good practices in WASH and child friendly environment. Shala Swachhta Gunak (SSG), is a benchmarking program under Shala Swachhta Award for Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) in schools with support from Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and UNICEF.
